If you win fuck all in a 3 team league you will often be sacked. If he was sacked half way through his second season with the team in 3rd (where they also finished), then it would presumably have been because those closest to the club felt that they weren't improving and that his squad with him at the helm wasn't capable of improvement

Sacked by the end of December, Moyes back in January.

They are just replacing like for like, very progressive.

Nagel,

But the stats don’t tell the real story.

Any Porto manager should have good stats: there are only two realistic rivals in Portugal. You “should” beat every other side regularly. So your win stats should be high. Very high at Benfica, Porto and Sporting.

You’re a bright guy - you know the context. He was sacked because they did not win anything in a weak league where there are three big fish in the pond (and Porto are autonomously bigger than one of them). Finishing third in Portugal is finishing bottom of that league as far as those big clubs are concerned. They offed him when it was obvious he wasn’t going to be able to compete with the only two rivals that matter in that country.

Finishing third in Portugal, with any of those three clubs, is not an achievement. And the owners know it.

Lopetegui at Porto:
78 games
67.95% win ratio
2.24 points per game

Amorim at Sporting
220 games
70.91% win ratio
2.28 points per game

Lopetegui is a coach & tactician.
His downfall appears to be drawing too many games.

Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
Sullivan as usual overriding all advice and knows best. Shame his track record counts only Moyes ( ironically ) as a managerial success.

Loptegui gets say or veto on transfers?
He’s appointed as a manager not a coach?
Sullivan may as well appoint Salthouse as DOF, Barry Silkman as Head of Recruitment and Mackay head of scouting with himself signing off on their recommendations. Wasnt it Silkman that said Steidten’s choice of young Ghanian Osman in Jan was over paying. Instead they hot 3 or 4 out the door and went for Moyes choice of Phillips.

Reputation / short term and bling factor over progression and the future.

Would be interested to know where Steidten and Noble’s heads are now. Tim may well know West Ham is now just a stepping stone s he wont be free to properly implement a 5 year project with a club headed by a narcissistic, egomaniac

Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
His sacking at Porto looks a bit harsh really. He was let go in early January after 25 games with a record of W17 D5 L3. Their record for the remainder of the season was W15 D1 L11, so obviously a great deal worse. And in his first season there they got 21 more points than in the previous one.

I think to some extent it's a good idea to judge a manager on how the club performs before and after his time there, and on that basis his time at Porto was pretty decent. Of their 14 managers this century, he ranks 5th for win %.

Well it looks like it's him, so we can only hope he bucks his personal trend, stays more than 2 years and builds a project. Given that he wanted both Ings and Cresswell a year ago I imagine they'll be delighted

"He oversaw the longest trophy drought under Porto’s ownership... It’s genuinely hard not to win a trophy across more than one season in Porto - especially given how much he spent (a record amount)."

Oh please. He only had one full season at Porto. They've had plenty of other seasons where they've won fuck all (including a couple of times since he left).

He spent a record amount because of how much they made off transfers, selling their best players. Something like €50m net profit in his first season and close to €100m the next.

Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
LJC - his record is “superb”?!

He oversaw the longest trophy drought under Porto’s ownership. He didn’t win anything. There are only three noteworthy clubs in Portugal. It’s genuinely hard not to win a trophy across more than one season in Porto - especially given how much he spent (a record amount). Porto fans do not remember him as “superb”.

He got sacked from Madrid in three months. I’m not sure you’ll convince them he was “superb” there, either.

He hasn’t managed many more clubs for any length of time (Wolves was half a season). Seville was his high point - and he did win a major trophy in his first season, which is no mean feat. But the team he built eventually fell well below expectations, and his club did not hesitate to sack him.

His reputation has been built on managing national youth teams - quite some time ago. Kids.

Btw, we all come across as thinking our opinions are fact. You too - hence your “superb” comment. It’s kinda the point of these sites: it’s mostly opinion.

Anyway, it’s an appointment out of all of our hands. But don’t anybody be surprised, if he gets the job, by just how bang average he is. His record is far from “superb” and his tantrum at Wolves doesn’t bode well for a club like ours with a board like ours.

Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
Irrespective of who it ends up being, I just want someone hungry who wants to prove themselves, and preferably on their way up rather than down. An astute acquisition, even if it’s bold or risky.

I’ve got a horrible feeling the man we end up with might well have us all wishing it was Lop. Sullivan is going to have to go against all his worst instincts with this one.

Agree time to move on and on your comment re Amorim, but that is a list of players that shouldn't have been bottom in the first olace. Whether Bruno Lage had lost his mojo (if he ever had one) or whether the mid-season world cup had played a part, who knows?

Nagel 12:27 Mon May 6
Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
That's a fair point about Wolves actually. They really did lose a lot of decent players. No wonder he quit.

Not sure what you mean about "did he assemble the Sevilla squad". They did buy a lot of good new players after he arrived, so I guess he did. Those 3 years when he finished 4th they spent more money than in the years before and since, so that probably puts that achievement in perspective.

goose 12:24 Mon May 6
Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
Time to move on:

Ruben Amorim when asked about his future:

"I stay. I have a contract with Sporting. Now is time to try for a third (title)."

The Amorim thing has got people’s expectations way out of line.

Onsideman, you’ve listed a load of mid table players that Lopetegui took from bottom of the league and turned them into a mid table side. Not sure what else you would want him to have done?

Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
Enlighten me LJC

What was superb about his time at Porto and Madrid? And did he assemble the Sevilla squad during those covid seasons before being sacked? As far as Wolves is concerned, unlike O'Neil, he had Neves, Nunes, Coady, Collins, Jimenez, Podence, Moutinho, Traore and Jonny all available to him

LJC 11:55 Mon May 6
Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?
Onsideman you really are coming across as someone who doesn’t know about football. As much as I don’t want him his club record is superb. Someone summed up Sbb the other day as a person who always comes across as thinking what he says as fact when it clearly isn’t.

Re: If David Moyes leaves West Ham who would you want to replace him?

But he's been blessed in his career, that's for sure, the foundation of which was based exclusively on successes with generational talents in the national youth teams
